Summer is an amazing time to spend hours watching films. Whether you are an avid film buff or a blockbuster movie fan, we’ve decided to put together a list of our favourite iconic movie scenes of all time – are you ready to check them out?
Here are our top ten, in no particular order:
The helicopter attack scene from Apocalypse Now (1979)
Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War opus seemed doomed from the get go, with many problems during filming (including an unexpectedly obese Marlon Brando turning up to set). That said, the end result is jaw dropping and nothing if not iconic. This famous scene features the Air Calvary helicopters swarming into a Vietcong Village with Wagner’s “Flight of the Valkyries” as a soundtrack.
The chariot race, Ben-Hur (1959)
You don’t have to be a fan of Ben Hur to appreciate the epic nine minute chariot race. Choreographed by one of Hollywood’s most famous stunt men, Yakima Canutt, this film will raise your pulse and change the way you watch films.
Clark Gable curses with aplomb, Gone With the Wind (1939)
When Rhett Butler spouts those famous words, “Frankly Scarlet, I don’t give a damn,” the world held their breath. After all, this was the first time that the word “damn” would appear in a major film – scandalous!
The farewell scene, Casablanca (1942)
Casablanca is often referred to as the most romantic film of all time, and it certainly features many heart thumping moments and quotes. That said, nothing is more romantic than the farewell scene as Ilsa jets away from Casablanca – Bogart utters those famous words, “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
Baptism by Fire, The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather is soundly thought of as one of the finest films in history, and after watching Martin Scorcese’s masterpiece it is easy to see why. This scene shocks and delights audiences to this day – Michael Corleone becomes the Godfather, and brings a bloody end to the Five Families War.
Eliot and E.T. fly across the moon, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
Now for something a little lighter! This scene is a heartwarming and exhilarating one, as any child of the ‘80s is sure to get misty eyed just thinking about it. Truly demonstrating Steven Spielberg’s genius for one of the first times on film, you can watch this again and again and never not be moved.
